Article image concept for a product-development discussion.
Starting an apparel project is easier when the first conversation gives everyone a clear decision to work toward. A product brief does not need to answer every production question on day one. It should give the development team enough context to discuss product direction, material options and what the first sample needs to clarify.
01 · Brief foundation
Explain the intended use
Start with the role the item is meant to play. Is it being developed for performance, outdoor use or an everyday apparel line? Who is expected to wear it, and in what setting? This context keeps the discussion focused on the decisions that matter for the product.
02 · Product direction
Define the product direction
Share the product category and the role it should play within the collection. Reference images, sketches and a tech pack can all help make the direction easier to discuss. If a choice is still open, say so—clear open questions are more useful than an assumption presented as final.
03 · Material discussion
Prepare for material discussion
Bring references that communicate the feeling, drape or appearance you are trying to explore. This gives the material conversation a practical starting point without guessing at specifications that have not yet been decided.
04 · First sample
Decide what the first sample should answer
The first sample is most useful when the team knows what it is meant to clarify. That might be product direction, fit, material feel or a construction choice. Naming these questions early gives the next discussion a clear purpose.
